Wussy has become one of the most celebrated independent bands in the American Midwest, a group whose idiosyncratically thoughtful songs and atmospheric, forceful guitar attack have won them a fervent cult following and a growing stack of rave reviews. Built around the sweet and sour mix of vocalists Lisa Walker and Chuck Cleaver, Wussy came together in 2001 when the two singers and songwriters casually performed together at an event in their native Cincinnati, Ohio. Soon after, the duo expanded into a full band. After an initial lineup change, Mark Messerly was recruited on bass, Joe Klug on drums, and John Erhardt on pedal steel in the years following. The band has become a cult favorite of fans and critics alike, both for its songwriting and varied sonic palette, often drawing comparisons to admitted heroes Television, John Prine, Velvets, Crazy Horse and Yo La Tengo. Co-bandleaders Walker and Cleaver share songwriting and guitar duties, swapping lead vocals and arguing in harmony, with each side of the story sung either in tandem or as traded verses.
