DIARY OF AN R&B CLASSIC: WAITING TO EXHALE SOUNDTRACK
The R&B Club and Classic Album Sundays Washington Present
Downstairs, All Ages
DOORS: 1:00 PM // SHOW: 1:30 PM
Saturday September 29, 2018
The R & B Club is a group founded by music aficionado Ashley-Dior Thomas, entrepreneur, broadcaster, and writer, Marcus Dowling plus well-respected journalist Justin Tinsley, to celebrate the legacy of soul music. Foremost in this quest is the "Diary of an R & B Classic" series, which will highlight key album and song releases from R & B's golden era of the 1990s.
Up next is classic R&B soundtrack "Waiting to Exhale"! This original soundtrack album is a soundtrack for the film of the same name, released on November 14, 1995 by Arista Records. Written and produced by Babyface, the soundtrack features appearances by some of the biggest names in the industry. The album remained at number one on the US Billboard 200 album chart for five weeks and Top R&B Albums chart for ten weeks, going 7× platinum, on September 4, 1996. It spawned two number-one hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart; "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" and "Let It Flow", and three top-ten hits, "Sittin' Up in My Room", "Not Gon' Cry" and "Count on Me". "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)", "Let It Flow" and "Not Gon' Cry" also topped the R&B hits chart.
The soundtrack assembled divas of all stripes—veterans like Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, and Chaka Khan; contemporary hitmakers like Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, and Mary J. Blige; youngins like Brandy and TLC. Like Forest Whitaker’s movie (based on Terry McMillan’s book), this album attempted to explore, explain, and celebrate black women’s experiences with specificity albeit without much conscious signaling of its political underpinnings
On Saturday, September 29th, from 1:30-3 PM, join Thomas, Dowling, and Tinsley as The R & B Club both listens to in-full, and discusses at-length, the impact of this release as the next installment of many ultimate celebrations of the legacy of iconic soul music.
