Distance isn’t realized all at once, it’s seen in little moments one at a time. Trying’s debut full-length Leave and Never Come Back, written over two years of moving back and forth, speaks to that experience through imagined echoes of a past home, the death of a childhood pet, the storms that slow our travels. The Columbus, Ohio indiepop band makes music with an everyday intimacy, the details are foreign but the feeling is familiar.

Between the beginning of writing and the album’s July 27 release, songwriter Cameron Carr found himself leaving, temporarily, his Midwestern home for the city of New York, returning, and leaving again only to move back once more. Leave and Never Come Back found itself delayed by the uncertainty of place but was returned to repeatedly for tweaks and retakes attempting to reconcile that uncertainty and the feelings of distance that came with it.

The base of Trying comes from Carr’s songwriting before being filled out by frequent collaborators, often with odd and whimsical instrumentation. Currently, the band consists of Carr (vocals, guitar, bass), Kelsey Yappel (violin, vocals, glockenspiel), Brady Costigan (guitar, bass), and Zayn Dweik (drums). In addition to Leave and Never Come Back, Trying’s discography includes the Cheerleading EP and a handful of bonus and b-side tracks.
