April 30, 2016

Celebrate DC's native son Duke Ellington's 117th Birthday and International Jazz Day on April 30 with Black Broadway on U and Songbyrd. The word jazz is very simple yet sounds elegant, but the genre of music it labels is very complex. From the early 20th century to the present, the evolution of jazz has produced many sounds from big band and bebop to swing and fusion. Through it all, Duke Ellington's pioneering work, musical legacy and contributions still remain as the definitive (or defining) sound and backdrop for "jazz."
